Introduction to text span annotation
Distinguish entities, context and negation using original text examples.
Annotator · Original teaching guide
What to learn and do
Read the category definition before locating a source-text span. Check negation and modifier rules, preserve the source and verify boundaries using the current tool’s character convention.
Original teaching example
Original example: “The patient denies fever but reports cough.” If only affirmed symptoms are in scope, “cough” is supported; the occurrence of “fever” does not establish an affirmed symptom.
Counterexample and correction
Counterexample: labeling both as affirmed symptoms. Correction: check the scope of negation, then verify each selected span against the source.
When evidence is uncertain
Another task may label negated symptoms with an attribute. This example’s scope is not universal.
Next step
Explain in your own words which judgment is supported and which remains uncertain, then continue to practice. Practice requires registration or sign-in. Reading this introduction is not course completion, assessment success or professional certification.
